MEDICINAL USES FOR COMMON FOODS SEMINAR

Eddie has prepared notes “Medicinal Uses for Common Food”, “Juice Recipes” and “Therapeutic Food Recipes” for more information on individual foods. These can be found at the end of these notes.

These notes are the additional information discussed at seminar.

Liver - sour, green, tendons.
Heart – bitter, red, tongue.
Lungs – white, colour, pungent.
Spleen – yellow, sweet, muscle.
Kidney – black, salty, bone.

TCM = Traditional Chinese Medicine

Yang hot dry pungent.
Yin wet moist damp.

Kidneys

All genetic material stored in kidneys. If you are ageing too young or looking older than you should, eating the right food can make a difference.

Liver

Green food in general, sour food tonifies liver, tendons if you're feeling stiff. You have to experiment with quantities to get the balance that feels right. Chinese do not specify as it is individual to each person.

Yang hot like booze surge of energy. Whiskey good for heart - so long as it is in moderation. Brandy etc any spirits good for circulation. In China bottles of spirits with snakes and all sorts in. Any bitter food like chicory can work too if you don't drink alcohol.

Molasses cool calming

Yang hot spicy ones
Yin is the cool moist ones.
Yang moves circulates

Blood is cool lubricating. Blood is root of your mind. TCM mind in heart governed in kidneys. To study for exams, build your blood. Chi is life force which is energy in your food. Chi (Qi) is your get up and go, your motive force of all your body working.

Body fluids lubricates muscles joints sinus cavities and joints that squeak.

Ginko opens blood vessels can be used for Alzheimer’s.

Immune system overdrive. Skin opens and closes as needed under control of lungs. Lungs are doormen of body. Protect or clear toxins from system.

 

Refined sugar is toxic. End a meal with something sweet but not sugar.

Use molasses or honey. Be careful of honey. Some beekeepers feed them buckets of water with sugar. Buy organic or wild. “Manuka” is very best. New Zealand honey bees feed on tea trees. Tonifies spleen anti bacterial. Say you ate something dodgy take some manuka. Go to horse suppliers and get bucket of manuka for 30 euro.

Story of horse ripped open at chest, was going to be put down but they used honey dressing, full recovery. Man bitten by dog. Used it. Scars faded.

 

Good vitamin E will help fade old scars.

Aspartame.. Can cause cancer, Alzheimer’s. Increases desire for sweets.

Diabetics - be careful of use of honey. Would need to be determined on an individual basis.

In coffee etc use honey or molasses.

Many honeys have chemicals added to stop crystals forming.

Oxalic acid in spinach and beetroot binds calcium helps arthritis. Kelp v v good.

Excess calcium builds up around joint.

Excessive cranberry not good for children as it can stop calcium absorption.

Live foods better.

Frozen rather than canned or dried. Food from abroad is dead, dead, dead! by the time we get it, energetically speaking.

Tinned beans have about 20 spoons of sugar.

Dried goods are ok providing they are within their dates.

Bottled waters can have salt added.

Use filtered water. Chlorine kills every thing, you included. Room temp water better. Stomach one degree hotter than mouth. Digestive tract is a muscle. Put cold water on hot muscle will cease working. System works at heating drink not to digesting food. Hot energy from spleen needed to run digestive system. Slice of lemon or lime in warm water in morning to get things going.

 

 

Food turned into green smoothie in stomach as it is broken down to a soup. Spleen extracts energy sends to lungs mixes with air. Powers heart and runs thru system. Spleen needs to be warm. If it's cold you feel bloated or feel stodgy.

Should we drink 3 litres of water a day?

You're not a toilet you don't need to be flushed. Some people are damper retain more fluid. they can benefit from being flushed. But not for everyone. Warm your water. It is very individual.

Aduke beans shift fluid.

Can you sprout all beans? Yes.

If you don't drink enough water is retained. If you do water flushes. Cells need junk shifted. Not enough water toxins held onto. Carrots v good for sight. Beef lambs liver good for eyesight.

Horseradish and lemon break down sinus. (or radish). grate horseradish squeeze lemon add water down the neck.

Herbs work on viral infections.

If ill are you cold or hot? cold runny mucus. hot gooey mucus.

Horseradish ginger good for cold condition. Go to bed with a hot whiskey. Chilli thyme in poteen. Leave for three months rub in for arthritis.

Citrus fruits are very cooling.

 

Dandelion is best stalk, leaves and flower above ground. dry it off. boil then for 10 mins simmer in hot water 10g a day. Is diuretic. Open bile ducts.

Garlic strongest anti biotic. Chew a clove of garlic. Fresh not dried out. Full bulb of garlic, smash 3/4 pint water boil with tight lid. for flu bronchitis. Sip slow but let cool or projectile vomiting.

Use on external conditions bites stings.

Nettle tea blood and liver purifier.

 

Glenisk, old macdonalds, yeo valley - good brand for live yoghurts. Look for Soil Association Approval label. If product says Live then it is, but many products contain dead bacteria.

 

“Udo's oil” ok spoonful (or capsule are ok ish). “Morepa” full of omega 3.

Lot of oils heated go rancid and that clogs your blood vessels. lining of gut smooth. heated oils break down into tiny molecules that they can be picked up by lining of abdomen. These little grains are like sandblasting your lining. then cholesterol sticks. pasteurised milk can have same effect.

fry in butter olive oil or coconut oil.

use butter rather than spreads. butter is five molecules long, easy for our bodies to break down. processed can be hundreds or molecules.

Bowl of quinoa as porridge reduces cholesterol.

Olive oil - cold pressed better.

Goats milk better than cow. Cow's milk 400 times more protein. Cow gum glue made form hooves etc.

Soya milk cold type. Tofu neutral hot or cold depends what is added. try to avoid gm food. ask in health food store.

Eggs are a complete food. Removing yolk removes good stuff.

 

Soil Association Approval means things are really organic.

Tesco soya milk claims not to be GM.

Salt is not bad for you. Has trace elements of nearly everything you need. But then they process it. Sea salt is best. rock salt. kidneys should excrete it but try not to overtax system.

Porridge is good for you especially in cold wet weather. Use jumbo oats as they haven't been milled as much. The more it's milled the less nutrients there are. Make with water rather than milk, add molasses to make it taste better. Jumbo oats need to be steeped. Use water you steeped them in.

Use white of egg for nappy rash.

Thyroid function kelp or seaweeds. Would need to work in conjunction with doctor. Do not reduce medication unless you have had tests.

 

Stews are good as all the nutrients are kept in the pot with your dinner. Warm liquids end up in system within 6 minutes.

Salad veg made of cellulose. Cows take days to break it down. We've one day to try! So salad foods go straight through system. Cold foods cool down spleen. Not absorbing nutrients. Body thinks famine coming TV dinners same.

Add peppers onion etc to salad as they are hot.

Bread

White and processed browns clog up your bowel so that you cannot absorb nutrietns. Then chicken cabbage etc get trapped and then rot and then that's what you absorb. Make bread from spelt with rice milk. Won't constipate or block you.

Use brewer's yeast. Use half brown half white and rice milk. Leave to rise.

Burnt toast stops diarrhoea. White pans burnt turn to carbon and is then good for you.

 

Afternoon session

Unless the labels say live then they are most probably dead bacteria and it does no good. It's harder to keep live bacteria alive so processing and storage mean it dies off.

Cabbage in water left to ferment. drink water.

alfalfa sprouts - see notes.

If you tend to be hot go for cold foods and vice versa. Gout arthritis inflammatory conditions stay away from alfafa.

Almonds can be good for nervous conditions for someone who is highly strung.

almond milk at bedtime or nervous about exams or going out. Cold water recipe in notes.

B17 and prussic acid (cyanide) in almonds peach kernels etc. almond milk half a pint sufficient.

 

 

Buy nuts whole if poss. Once opened keep away from air as they go off. Pistachio and cashew need to be cooked as they are toxic without.

B17 kills cancer.

Apples have B17. pips have prussic acid.

Our pH should be below 7 we need to be alkaline.

Get litmus paper from chemist and lick it to see what your pH is..

Apricots for liver disorder, anger frustration migraine. when liver gets too hot the heat rises and so do the symptoms of aches pains etc. Dried ok but most are sulphured. The brighter the colour the worse it is. Try and get good quality. Boil kernels, drink mixture, don't take more than 4 a day. NOT IF PREGNANT can cause miscarriage.

Take a couple of times a week to keep liver healthy.

Fruit for migraine, kernels for constipation. Boil for 15 mins.

 

If you've had an organ removed, energetically it is still there. Just because it's not there physically, there are 4 other levels.

 

Artichoke great source of fibre, milk thistle same family, don't boil too long, serve al dente?

Skin problems due to too much heat cirrhosis etc so artichoke can help.

can increase bile - good.

 

Asparagus kidney stones 4 cooked spears with can of full sugar coke every hour for 4 hours.

total of 16 spears. don't eat solid food.

Avocado has omega 3, brain and nervous tissue used to repair any damage to body. generally won't upset someone who has had gall bladder removed. Lemon juice will open up bile ducts. high in fat, good fat so high calorie, one or two a week. Cholesterol is required, you'd die without it.

“Morepa” omega 3 only one worth doing. build up joints coating on nervous tissue. can stop cravings for chocolate etc if you are trying to lose weight. take once a day. capsule. don't heat udo's or morepa. don't add to porridge as they will go rancid.

take capsule / oil on empty stomach if poss.

Bananas one of the coldest in thermal energies. can slow system down. Can take 2 days to digest. don't eat one a day. good to lower high blood pressure. can lubricate lower intestine. Easier to digest cooked. Bleeding haemorrhoids grill entire banana and eat skins and all. Digestive system most active between 7 and 9 am.

Cereal and fruit. fruit processes real quick, bloats as fruit ferments. eat fruit first. unless probiotic yoghurt with it. Eat cereal half an hour later.

Kiwi and papayas break down things, can even tenderise meat.

Beef good blood tonic. buy from butcher. hung for three weeks so that the proteins are broken down.

Barley shifts fluid retention especially round your middle.

Home made barley.! simmer and then you don't need to steep it.

Any pungent herbs affect lung, will warm spleen, boost digestion.

Basil promotes lung function and can kill bacteria. the fresher the better. add at the end if you are adding to soups etc. you need the good oil from them.

The more you cook garlic the milder it gets and the less medicinal.

Rub garlic on thigh one hour later your breath smells of garlic. Raw garlic juice can burn so add almond oil perhaps. Koga is a good brand.

Any fresh food you are getting the life force, the longer they're left the chi and nutritional elements are reduced. Spice in beginning of cooking, herbs at the end.

Don’t buy lettuce in ready done packs, as the nutrients are gone. Grow your own.

Beetroot. Fresh beetroot. Good blood tonic.

Don’t eat spinach and beetroot tops oxalic acid not any good for arthritis and osteoporosis. Don’t go near them if you suffer from either.

Any hot herbs mixed with sesame after grinding and use as poultice, or chilli and vodka for bad bruising.

Broccoli has magnesium good for cramps.

 

Button mushrooms. lower blood fat levels. Detoxifying will trigger immune response to cancer. better to cook than raw. break down easier.

Broccoli one of the best as much calcium as milk and easier to absorb. for bones and teeth. Vit E too so great for skin. if not fresh use frozen. full of panatenic acid great for hair (pantene shampoo got its name from it).

We consume 10 times the amount of milk than in the 1950s but osteo problems on the increase.

 

Borage is excellent for stagnant type depression. If weighed down with problems try borage instead of drugs.

 

Juices tend to be cold so you can add ginger. Good juicer machine can cost up to €700.

Duodenal ulcers - carrot and cabbage juice 2 pints a day. Take between meals or take three days and don't eat food just drink. Don’t plan on leaving home!

Carrots - lungs stomach eyes. Vitamin A. liver and gall detox but be prepared to turn orange. not carrot but bile being flushed. 3 pints of carrot juice and distilled water. beta-carotene and you tan better.

Do not detox on just water as too much stuff gets dumped into your blood stream.

Too much coffee can strip system of nutrients. use ground. don't use triple espressos!

Green tea cooling. Black tea warming. Don’t add milk.

Cucumber good for inflammatory conditions.

Celery for gout or arthritis. Potato skins and celery stalks, bring to boil, simmer half an hour, drink two pints a day, will break down acid crystals in your system. Don’t stray from loo! Continue a couple times a week. Store in fridge for a few days.

Raw ginger under tongue will raise blood pressure.

 

Big bowl of fruit to stop bloating add celery. Citrus fruits are all cold.

Citrus orange skins counter this but only use organic; don't use the ones covered in wax etc.

“Liver wind” is like a desert storm, gets trapped in skull which can result in stroke. Liver will grow back and repair itself if given a chance.

Grapes - seedless are gm so get seeded. Eat seeds too. You can live on grape juice for weeks at a time. Dark grapes better. Clears all junk from system.

Anti fungal grapefruit seed extract works wonders. or grape seeds.

Olives lubricate and moisten.

Think of where things grow, nature supplies what was needed.

Vitamin K in cabbage is a no no for someone with clotting disorders. Cabbage thins blood.

Liquorice (not Bassetts) enters every organ and system in your body. Harmonises all, toxic effects, food poisoning. Liquorice tea. Pale twig or stir-fried in honey yellow colour. Try out different brands to see which suits you.

 

Anecdote of doctors surgery: In China a doctor used to go on house calls which would take a month of so to do his rounds. Many patients called to surgery and rather than send them away empty handed his wife handed out liquorice which is what she was taking herself. When the doctor returned he found that many of his patients had recovered from their illnesses.

 

Watch out for star anise on label of liquorice as it's not the real thing. 7/8 grams a day.

 

Lemon is good to break down meat if you eat lots of meat. Squeeze of lemon in warm water kills bacteria in lower gut. When bacteria dead eat some rhubarb, sweeten with molasses or sugar.

Silicon found in carrots and parsnips can help arthritis, especially seasonal. Cooked, roasted, souped.

Parsley - throat lymph - make a tea of it. Shift bacterial stuff. Physically massage nodes.

Pineapples are anti-inflammatory. Must be ripe. Unripe will burn you. Gargle juice or let chunk slowly seep down throat with juice.

Seaweed - most of trace elements in sea are in our blood. Thyroid issues lots of iodine. seaweed softens hardness, goitre or breast lumps or paint on iodine.

No seaweed in Irish waters can poison you, make sure there is no effluent pipe near where you collect the seaweed.

 

Roll-on anti-perspirants better than sprays. “Lugols solution” for external use. Get in chemist or vets.

 

Spirulina (pond scum) pills or powder, stir in veg juice. Boost blood oxygen levels. For menopausal syndrome.

Rice in pot choice of veg, meat or herbs; cook slowly for a few hours, do night before, heat up for breakfast. Works as a type of porridge, use sweet rice that clumps.

Brown rice has more fibre and can be hard n the system. Beef is warming, lamb is hot, chicken neutral.

Cold and shivery - use lamb.

Chilli peppers cause sweating ergo cooling.

Tiger bones tea traditionally used as bones very hot. Now they use dog bones. Soak bones in wine!

Soup

Get marrow bones. Add vinegar to bones to get marrow to split. Skim for ten mins at start.

Healthy stock cube.

chicken or whatever or pork. stick in pot with veg. boil skim, let simmer strain fluid, pop in ice bags and freeze.

Turmeric

- loosens phlegm. more beta-carotene than any other food.

Sage

kills all bugs and muscle relaxant. or nerves. sage tea. Do not use if pregnant unless you want labour to start.

Quinoa

has more calcium than milk. Make with water not milk. nice clean diet. 3 6 and 9 omega.

Nutmeg

be careful toxic in high doses. one nut can have you seeing fairies for a week. 2 can kill an elephant. saffron highly toxic. Do not use if you are pregnant.

Turnip

good to clear blood. sulphur clears.

Add pungent herb to clear phlegm with turnip.

 

Orange and honey for colds.

Sore throat gargle pineapple juice.

Senokot used long term bad idea as your system can’t manage on its own when you stop taking. Use pears or purgative herbs like aloe vera.

Bentanite and psyllium husk (provides bulk) to get rid of stuff trapped in bowel for years.

Get medical advice/practitioner for this one.

 

80 20 rule. Be good 80% of the time, enjoy other 20%.

Coconuts

Spleen, tonify, build fluids. hot dry conditions.

Flax seed

On porridge put them in cup pour on hot water leave for a few mins to take off coating. Release essential fatty acids. Use water to make porridge.

Or chew them.

 

Peanuts- be careful. of where you get the peanuts from. sown on cotton fields which have chemicals in ground. buy organic or don't eat them.

Toasting nuts can loose some nutritional values. but they will taste better.

Buy your nuts in shells. keep air away from nuts. air tight containers.

Chew seeds before swallowing as they have a protective coating.

Coffee blender to chop nuts.

Toasting seeds warms them so they lose cooling nature. over heated they go rancid.

Shellfish depends on the water it lives in. crab a “no no” for pregnancy. shrimps hot in nature.

If a food tends to be cool though add ginger.

Sprouted barley good for sweats. Germinate and make tea. Oyster shells. Daily for bad sweats. Boil shells for hour. (Make soup out of barley if you like).

Raw raspberries blackcurrant. stop sweats.

Sprouted seeds gives more life force.

Carrot juice can balance hormonal levels and can be safer than HRT. There are food alternatives but it can take some playing around.

Xiaoyaowan “free and easy wanderer” will make as much serotonin as prozac. Get in Chinese store.

 

SAD – get full spectrum lights, daylight stimulation bulbs.

 

Stick to the rule “Everything in Moderation”.

 

And remember:

Do not make radical changes to your diet.

Introduce changes over a six-week period or longer.

Do not stop taking any medication without the consent of your doctor or health practitioner.

Do consult your doctor if you have any doubts or concerns.

Buy foods that are from your country of origin

Grow your own vegetables

Buy unprocessed foods

MEDICINAL USES OF COMMON FOODS.

Aduki beans – Tonify the kidney yang have diuretic properties. Easily digestible.

Alfalfa sprouts – neutral, slightly cold. Tonify the spleen Qi drains dampness lowers cholesterol. Contains the phytoestrogens daidzein and genistein.The sprouts contain the amino acid canavananine which can aggravate acidic conditions. The sprouts are 30% protein and a good source of chlorophyll and vitamin K.

Almonds – warm and sweet.Tonify spleen Q and heart yin.Vitamin B17 (laetrile) has shown promise as a cancer treatment but care is needed due to the prussic acid content of the nut. Almond milk can be good for dry cough and lung yin deficiency in general.

Almond milk method.

Soak 3 tablespoons of almonds overnight in enough water to cover them.

Remove the skins by rubbing.

Blend with 1 cup of water and a spoon of honey.

 

Almonds are 18% protein and contain almost a full spectrum of B vitamins as well as calcium iron prosperous and potassium. They are one of nature’s richest sources of vitamin E.

Apple – Cooling sweet and sour.Tonify the spleen lung and stomach yin.Green (sour) apples can be used to clear liver heat tonify the gall bladder and soften gallstones. Apple pectin promotes beneficial bowel flora as well as providing a good source of soluble dietary fibre. The presence of malic and tartaric acid in apples makes them a good indigestion remedy.

Apple cider vinegar. Thermally neutral it balances the PH of the body.

Apricot – Neutral sweet and sour Tonify lung yin and moisten the bowel. Apricots contain vitamin A alpha beta gamma and delta carotenoids as well as iron cobalt and copper which can help build blood. Vitamin B 17 (laetrile) can be found in the kernels. Caution in pregnancy.

Artichoke – Drain liver and gallbladder fire and Tonify Qi.Artichokes increase the production of bile and can help with the digestion of fatty foods.They contain vitamin C folate magnesium chromium manganese potassium iron and calcium. Artichokes are easy to digest and are a good source of dietary fibre.

Asparagus – A slightly warm Kidney tonic drains damp and moistens the intestines. It is good for all kidney complaints where there is no swelling present. Asparagus contains glutathione one of the best natural substances known to prevent cancer it also contains rutin which can help prevent the rupture or blood vessels. A full vitamin B complex vitamin A C and E as well as potassium and zinc are available in asparagus.

Avocado – cooling and sweet. Tonify spleen blood and yin. Avocado is a good source of lecithin and omega 3 EFA’s both essential for proper brain function. Avocado is approximately 80% fat but it is monounsaturated fat.

Bananas – very cold and sweet. Tonify stomach yin lubricate the lungs and large intestine. Bananas are rich in potassium and can be used to treat hypertension.

Beef – neutral and sweet. Tonify stomach and spleen Qi and blood.

Barley – tonifies the spleen Qi and regulates and the stomach function. Barley can be used as a diuretic when damp or dampness and heat need to be drained from the body.

Basil – warm and pungent. Tonify lung Qi and yang. Promotes the circulation of lung Qi. It is effective against bacterial infections colds and flu.

Bay leaf – warm and pungent. Tonify lung Qi and spleen yang. A tea made of bay leaf can calm the mind while a poultice applied to bruises of arthritic joints can move stagnant Qi and blood.

Beetroot – Neutral sweet. Tonify spleen liver and heart blood. The greens contain calcium iron magnesium and phosphorous. They also have high oxalic acid content and can be toxic if eaten in large quantities. Can be used to strengthen the heart improve circulation and calm the mind. Beetroot and carrot soup can regulate hormone balance during the menopause.

Broccoli – cooling pungent slightly bitter. Drains damp and treats summer heat conditions. Contraindicated in cases of thyroid deficiency or low iodine levels.

Blackberry – neutral sour. Diuretic and astringent.

Black sesame seed – Tonify liver and kidney blood and yin.

Bok Choy – cooling. Tonify lung yin and produce fluids. Has a cooling affect on inflamed lungs and is a rich source of vitamin C.

Borage – pungent and cool. Tonify the heart yin reduce the fever and calms the mind. Regular consumption of borage is good to treat mild depression due to Qi stagnation.

Button mushrooms – cooling and sweet. Mushrooms can reduce the blood fat levels (MUFAS).They have antibiotic properties and can increase white cell counts. All mushrooms have the ability to counteract heat toxins. Mushrooms are a good source of germanium an element that helps increase the amount of oxygen reaching the bodies cells.

Brazil nut – warming. Excellent source of calcium. Tonify kidney yang.

Broccoli – cools liver yin and benefits the eyes.Brocolli contains as much calcium as milk as well as selenium vitamin A and E.Contains pantothenic acid and vitamin A and is good for rough dry skin. Has more vitamin C than oranges.

Butter – sweet and warming. Tonify stomach yin and lubricate the large intestine. A good source of vitamin A and D. Frying in butter or coconut butter is safe as they don’t turn rancid at high temperatures.

Cabbage – warming sweet and pungent. Tonify stomach yin and produce fluids. Cabbage is an excellent blood purifier.

Green cabbage contains chlorophyll vitamin E vitamin U and calcium as well as more vitamin C than an orange. To treat stomach or duodenal ulcers drink a glass of cabbage juice 3 times a day between meals.

All members of the cabbage family are rich in phytonutrients.

Cloves – Warm and pungent.Tonify kidney and spleen yang. Cloves contain calcium iron magnesium manganese phosperous potassium zinc and vitamins A B1 B2 and C.

Cherries – warm and sweet they tonify the spleen yang and drain damp. A good treatment for gout and rheumatisim. The iron content in cherries can help to build blood.

Coconut meat – warms the spleen and produces body fluids.

Chicken – warm and sweet.Tonify the stomach and spleen Qi and yang.

Chive- warming. Tonify kidney yang. Chives promote blood circulation and chive tea can be used to treat injuries or cold type arthritis.

Coffee – warm sweet and bitter it Tonify heart yang.

Caraway – reduces spasms in the GIT. Moves liver Qi.

Cardamom – neutral and slightly warm. Tonify the spleen stomach and kidney yang. Stops cough, drain damp from the lung.

Cinnamon – hot pungent and sweet. Warms the spleen and kidney yang. Cinnamon contains calcium chromium copper iodine iron manganese phosphorous potassium zinc and vitamins A B1 B2 and C.

Cauliflower – sweet and warm.Tonify the spleen Qi and improve digestion.

Carrots – Neutral and sweet.Tonify the lungs spleen and liver. Carrots contain vitamin A B vitamins prosperous iodine calcium and phenol coumarin which helps prevent blood clotting.

Carrot juice can be used to help burns heal as carrot juice is alkaline and cooling. They can be juiced and produce a potent diuretic that can soften bile (gallstones).The huge amounts of silicone in carrots strengthen the connective tissue. The beta carotene (vitamin A) in carrots can help with infection of the mucus membranes.

Cherries –warm and sweet. They tonify the blood.

Pea – sweet slightly warm. Harmonise the spleen stomach and liver. Mildly laxative and a good source of vitamin B complex.

Peach – cooling sweet and sour.Tonify stomach and lung yin, moisten the intestines.

Plum – cooling sweet and sour. Harmonise the liver and can be used to treat conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver and liver damage in general. A rich source of oxalic acid.

Porridge (oats) –warm sweet.Tonify the spleen and heart. They can be slightly damp forming especially if combined with milk.

Mussel – warm and salty.Tonify the liver and kidney yin.

Milk (cows) – neutral sweet.Tonify the yin.

Millet – slightly cool sweet and salty. Very easily digestible good in cases of spleen Qi deficiency.

Miso – the longer it is fermented the warmer it gets. Contains 12 – 20% protein and lactobacillus that will improve digestive function and boost the immune function.

Both green and black tea contains antioxidants that retard atherosclosis (milk counteracts this).Tea contains up to 20% tannin and this can deplete iron reserves as well as inhibit cell replication, this is one of the reasons it can be used to treat cancer.

Raspberries – warm sweet and sour.Tonify the liver yin and astringe the kidney. Can be used to cleanse and purify the blood. The astringent action of raspberries can help control spontaneous sweating.

Quinoa – slightly warm nourish the spleen Qi and the pericardium.

Rye – Tonify the spleen yang and drains dampness. The sour taste can benefit the liver yin.

Kidney beans – neutral and sweet.Tonify the spleen. Diuretic.

Kale – warming sweet slightly bitter and pungent. Harmonise the stomach and cause lung Qi to descend and disperse. A good source of chlorophyll vitamin A calcium and iron.

Shrimp – warm and sweet.Tonify kidney yang.

Sage- Pungent and hot. Sage has potent antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial actions against many of the common bugs that cause chest and throat infections. Sage contains phytoesrogens that can regulate hormone levels and help symptoms of menopausal related conditions. Not to be used in pregnancy as it is a muscle relaxant and stimulates contractions.

 

Spinach – cooling sweet.Tonify stomach yin and lubricate the large intestine. Spinach is a good food for people who suffer from hot dry conditions such as diabetes as it is very moistening and cooling. The leaves contain oxalic acid and this can have detrimental effects on calcium absorption even tough the leaves contain high concentrations of calcium.

Scallion – warm pungent and bitter. Harmonises the heart. Scallions have an antifungal and antimicrobial effect. They can be used to treat conditions such as common cold. Scallion tea can treat cold type arthritis pain due to Qi stagnation or diarrhoea due to spleen Qi deficiency. Scallions also have a diuretic affect and can be used in the treatment of oedema especially in the upper jiao.

Sea salt – salty and grounding.Tonify the kidney and blood. Human blood and lymphatic fluid contain all the trace elements found in sea water. A fall of 1% in levels of some of these trace elements can cause symptoms of a nervous system disorder. Trace elements from salt are easily absorbed.

Watercress – hot and pungent. Moves lung and large intestine Qi.It can be used to promote appetite by draining damp from the middle jiao.

Walnuts – warm and sweet. Lubricate the lung and large intestine.

Watermelon – very cool and sweet. Cools the heart stomach and bladder. The seeds of watermelon contain cucurbocitrin a compound which dilates capillaries and lowers high blood pressure. A tea made of the rind can be used to treat diabetes.

Coconut – warm sweet.Tonify the spleen yang and builds body fluids.

JUICE RECIPES

ARTRITIS – Celery juice dislodges inorganic calcium deposits and holds them in solution 1 pint a day or 2 pints if mixed with carrot juice.

Grapefruit juice – good to dissolve inorganic calcium deposits. Mix it with distilled water 2 pints a day.

Cherries – black cherry contains enzymes that dissolve calcium deposits 500gr for breakfast and no other solid food for 12 hours. Best to do just a few days on cherries.

ASTMA –Horseradish and lemon juice will dissolve mucus in the sinus cavities and lungs.1 teaspoon 3 times a day

Carrot and radish juice mix it 3 parts carrot to 1 part raddish.Take 1 pint a day

Cranberries contain potent vasodilators make tea from the fresh berry and sip as needed

Garlic tea dissolves mucus and kills infection

Anaemia –blackstrap molasses in warm water

Fennel juice can boost plasma levels 1 pint a day it can be mixed with carrot juice

Spinach juice boosts haemoglobin levels but be careful of the oxalic acid content of the leaves.

GASTRITIS – Carrot beet and cucumber.Alkelise the stomach

Raw dark grapes or grape juice for 3 days.1 kg of fruit a day or juice equivalent

Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid which reduces the PH of the stomach.2 tablespoons in warm water up to 3 times a day.

GASTRIC ULSERS – Cabbage (contains vitamin U) juice 2 pints a day. Mix it with carrot to make it drinkable

GOUT – Carrot beet and cucumber.

Parsley juice facilitates oxygen metabolism and reduces blood acidity

Celery juice clears blood acidosis and dissolves accumulations of inorganic calcium

LIVER DISORDERS- Raw tomato for 3 days, take either fresh juice or the whole fruit

STEAM OVER HIGH HEAT FOR 1 HOUR

SPRINKLE WITH SEA SALT, PEPPER SCALLION AND A FEW DROPS OF SESAME OIL AND SERVE.

THIS FORMULA IS A GOOD GENRAL TONIC TO STIMULATE ENERGY LEVELS AND BOOST IMMUNITY.

 

YI YI REN AND BROWN RICE PORRAGE.

INGREDIENTS.

1 CUP BROWN RICE

.5 CUP YI YI REN

8 DRIED JUJUBES (DATES) 2 RAW EGG YOLKS (optional)

SESAME OIL

SEA SALT

METHOD.

SOAK THE RICE AND YI YI REN FOR 1 HOUR IN COLD WATER THEN DRAIN.

PUT INTO A POT WITH 6 CUPS OF WATER BRING TO THE BOIL THEN SIMMER FOR 1-2 HOURS.

TO SERVE

LADLE THE PORRAGE INTO A BOWL ADD A FEW DROPS OS SESAME OIL AND AN EGG YOLK.

THIS RECIPY PROVIDES 17% PROTIEN AND A SOURCE OF B VITAMINS.IF THE EGG YOLKS ARE ADDED THERE IS LECETHIN AND AMINO ACIDS.ENERGETICALY THIS RECIPE TONIFYS YANG.IT ALSO HAS A MILD DURETIC ACTION AS WELL AS PROVIDING DIETARY FIBRE.THIS PORRAGE CAN HELP TREAT ARTRETIC JOINTS ON ITS OWN BUT THE INCLUSION OF CINNAMON TWIGS CAN BE ESPECIALLY USEFULL.

 

 

 

GOJI BERRY STEW.

INGREDIENTS.

1 kg of fresh lamb or beef.

15 – 20 dried shitake or ling zhi mushrooms.

1 cup rice wine.

40 grams of goji berries.

Sea salt

Pepper

Sesame oil

Method.

Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the mushrooms and leave to soak for 20 minuets. When you drain the mushrooms keep the water.

Cut the meat into cubes and stir fry until brown in a hot wok.

Put the meat, goji berries and mushrooms into a pot, add the wine, half the water that the mushrooms soaked in and 3 cups of fresh water.

Bring to the boil then simmer for 2 hours.

To serve sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and a few drops of sesame oil.

 

Goji berries are a tonic for the liver and kidneys that nourish blood. Lamb or beef are good sources of carnitine an amino acid that helps the conversion of fat molecules into energy. Shiitake or ling zhi mushrooms have been used for centuries as tonics and modern research has shown that they boost the immune function and inhibit the growth of cancerous cells.

 

GOJI BERRY WINE.

INGREDIENTS.

10gr goji berries

10gr honey fried foxglove root (rehmanniae glutinosae)

10gr fleece flower root (polygonum multiflorum)

 

Method.

Steep the herbs in one litre of spirits for two months.

Take one fluid ounce twice a day on an empty stomach.

This formula is safe for long term use to help prevent premature ageing and boost sexual function.

 

TEA FOR WIND COLD

Ginger and scallion root tea. This formula is effective only for COLD (chills with slight fever) feeling cold all the time.

Ingredients

6 slices of root ginger

6 scallions. It is only the white part of the scallion that is used in this formula.

LOTUS ROOT DECECTION

Ingredients

1 full lotus root.

Brown sugar DO NOT USE HONEY

Method.

Cut the root into sections at the joints and put it into a pot.

Bring to the boil and cook over medium heat (not too hard of a boil) for 45 minuets.

Remove the root pieces and add sugar to taste.

Store in the fridge for up to a week at a time. Drink 1 tea cup twice a day 30 minuets before food.

For acute conditions drink it as needed.
